Communication and Social Influence Classes

Communication and Social Influence students will gain a foundation in effective communication through core courses in public speaking, persuasion, argumentation and social influence. They choose one of three subject areas—civic engagement, conflict communication or risk communication—as a primary emphasis, but they also take courses in their secondary interests. Students take advanced method and theory courses, are offered a wide range of experiential options and conclude their courses of study with a senior seminar. In each senior seminar students design and enact a public communication campaign.

Communication and Civic Engagement

Discuss and debate how we should approach the purpose and the function of communication in relation to civic engagement at the local, regional and national levels around the globe. You’ll focus on a wide range of communicative activities, whether they be intrapersonal, interpersonal, mediated or mass.

Social Influence Inquiry

Study communication and social influence crosses boundaries, from the humanities to the social sciences. Gain a foundation of different ways to define and seek out knowledge that, through communication, influences our attitudes, beliefs and behaviors. Most importantly, it educates students on how to ask a good question and think critically about the knowledge they are generating about various communication processes.

Rhetoric and Civic Culture

Examine the strategies and implications of human discourse in a variety of political settings. You’ll study the implications and consequences of everyday choices, persuasion in electoral campaigns, political sign usage, and the relationship between media and political ideology.

Conflict and Influence: Identity, Emotion and Power

Learn the ways conflict is driven by emotion, identity and power. Explore how these drivers create and reflect conflict and how interpersonal and social conflict management must attend to them to secure constructive resolution.

Misperceptions and Misinformation

Explore the psychological and social factors that make people vulnerable to deceptive communication, misinformation and conspiracy theories, and learn why it is often difficult to correct misinformed beliefs.

Graduation Requirements

The Communication and Social Influence major requires a minimum of 45 semester hours of credit within the major; courses must be completed with a grade of C- or better. To graduate students must successfully complete a minimum of 124 semester hours of credit with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, overall and in the major.

University Requirements

All students are required to complete the General Education (GenEd) curriculum and take a minimum of two writing-intensive courses in their major.

Klein College Requirements

Communication and Social Influence requires students to take five core communication and social influence courses, as well as six courses in selected subject areas. Students select four courses in their primary subject area and at least one course in each of the two other subject areas. Students also take a culture course, a method course, a junior- or senior-level experience course and a senior seminar for a total of 45 credits.
