Media Studies and Production Classes
As a Media Studies and Production master’s program student, you’ll get scholarly and professional training in several areas of study, with a general foundation in communication theory and methodology.
In this concentration, introductory, intermediate and advanced courses are offered in the following areas of study.
Learn the economics, history, law, policy and regulation that pertain to media and new technology industries in both national and international contexts.
Explore the cultural, political, psychological and sociological aspects of media and communications technologies, particularly in terms of their impact on everyday life.
Organizations and Networks
Analyze the behavior and management of communication systems, particularly in terms of media industries and institutions.
Media Production and Business
This concentration provides preparation for a professional media career with training in areas including
- corporate, educational and nonprofit communication;
- digital, multimedia, radio and TV production;and
- media management, marketing and research.
As either a part- or full-time graduate student, you’ll expand your knowledge by taking advantage of a diverse and challenging curriculum as you prepare to advance your career in any of these areas of specialization or continue on to earn the Doctor of Media and Communication degree. Four Plus One Option
The Four Plus One program enables Media Studies and Production majors and Communication Studies majors to pursue a Master of Arts in Media Studies and Production in an additional year. Students begin taking graduate courses during the second semester of junior year that count toward both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. After earning a bachelor’s degree, students can complete graduate course work the following year, including two summer semesters. Learn more about our accelerated programs.
Communication Research Methods
Examine the underlying philosophy and overview of research methods of media issues, including content analysis, ethnography and field and laboratory experiments, focus groups, in-depth interviews, market research, polling, rating systems, and surveys.
Study the historical and societal roles of mass media with an emphasis on the structure and workings of mass media industries and their interactions with the government and the public.
Communication in Organizations
Learn theories of organizational structure and their relationships to media processes, as well as current practices and underlying communication systems.
Explore digital, radio and TV technologies to produce content for various platforms.
Graduate Radio Workshop
Design and produce radio announcing and talk show projects.
Law and Ethics of Digital Media
Discuss the legal and ethical issues facing the media in online environments, including copyright law, First Amendment controversies and privacy.
Television Production Workshop
Develop a weekly, half-hour TV program that explores Philadelphia. This course focuses on meeting professional standards in content, form and technical quality.
To graduate from this program, you’ll need to successfully complete 36 credits of required and elective course work. You must maintain continuous enrollment in the program and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Master of Arts in Media Studies and Production program culminates in comprehensive exams, a master’s project or a master’s thesis.
