Minor in Journalism Studies
News literacy has quickly become an important requirement for functioning in a democratic society. The Minor in Journalism Studies program at Klein College of Media and Communication is a six-course, 18-credit academic program that provides students who are not Journalism majors with an understanding of the growing complexity of the global media system. It also enables them to become more informed members of the public sphere by exploring the cultural, ethical, global, moral, political and sociological issues that govern journalism’s role in contemporary public life.
The Journalism Studies Minor also provides students with skills and knowledge, including information gathering, media literacy, photography, video, web development and writing, in order to enhance their careers and communities.
Students who are heading into careers outside the media will develop a stronger understanding of how contemporary issues in journalism affect their roles as citizens in an increasingly interconnected world. For students aspiring to become businesspeople, doctors, educators, lawyers and policymakers, the Minor in Journalism Studies offers a perspective on how journalism touches upon nearly every aspect of global life.
You’ll focus on critical analysis of news media and industries, and coursework will help develop critical thinking and clear writing skills as you learn about norms, practices and technology in the rapidly changing field of journalism.
A Minor in Journalism Studies prepares students for employment in a variety of media outlets and communication firms as well as related organizations. With a Journalism Studies Minor, students will be prepared for the following careers, among many others.
- Community organizer
- Corporate communication specialist
- Media relations specialist
- Project manager
