About the Honoree
Kia Johnson is a Television Producer with more than 35-years experience in the news industry. She has a passion for covering breaking news and has covered countless national and international events during her career. She is at home in the fast-paced setting of a newsroom as well as in the field covering breaking news.
Johnson has spent most of her career working for Reuters in Washington, where she became the first African American producer hired in the United States.
During her tenure, she has acquired a diverse range of multimedia skills which she has used as a White House producer, in the field covering every U.S. presidential campaign since 1992, and in the trenches covering major national and international news events.
In addition to politics, Johnson has covered the Winter Olympics, World Cup Soccer and has a particular interest in covering historical retrospectives, quirky human-interest and feature stories.
She is also a long-time volunteer with the Temple University Alumni Association and is currently the Vice President of Operations for the TUAA. While a student at Temple, Johnson was a four-year member of the Women's basketball team and presented morning news segments on WRTI radio.
Before working at Reuters, Johnson worked AT KYW-TV, Westinghouse Broadcasting and WJLA-TV in Washington.
Johnson is the mother of a Klein graduate. Her daughter Sydney Sloan graduated in 2019 and currently works for NBC Sports.
