Biography

Annette Masterson is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in the Media and Communication program at Temple. For the 2023-2024 year, she was awarded the Advanced Graduate Fellowship at the Center for Humanities at Temple (CHAT). Her research centers on sexualized and romanticized content, and the intersection of technology and entertainment. She currently analyzes the institutions and advertising of humanoid sexual robotics. Her dissertation focuses on the political-economic ramifications of the emerging sex robot industry from three levels: corporate, advocacy, and government. Recent work has been published in Human Machine Communication and the Journal of Children and Media.

Previously at Hearts & Science, a global marketing agency, she coordinated with Warner Bros. theatrical domestic marketing departments in Burbank, CA on campaigns such as Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Crazy Rich Asians. She also has a background in nonprofit marketing and management. She holds an MA in Media Studies from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, and a BA from Juniata College.
