PHILADELPHIA’S HOME FOR COMMUNICATION THOUGHT-LEADERSHIP 

Temple University’s Media and Communication Doctoral Program (M&C) offers an interdisciplinary curriculum in communication theory and research, designed to provide students with the breadth and depth of knowledge needed to make significant contributions in the field of communication. Our award-winning faculty are active scholars with international reputations.Graduates of the doctorial program hold positions as faculty, administrators and communication policy researchers around the world.

By far, one of the most useful and enriching aspects of the M&C program is its interdisciplinary curriculum. We were exposed to a diverse range of theories, methodologies, and pedagogical practices, drawing on fields such as art, ecology, history, political science, and digital humanities. What’s more, the curriculum is designed to encourage intellectual and social exploration by allowing you to take courses outside of Klein College, reinforcing the program’s commitment to interdisciplinary study. One of the program’s more unique features is offering opportunities to integrate theory with practical application, be it graduate-level documentary filmmaking course or graduate opportunities for studying abroad. I treasured my time in the M&C program and my experiences throughout have been foundational to my development as a critical cultural scholar, educator, and activist.

EXPLORING QUESTIONS, CREATING KNOWLEDGE.

Exploring the impact and opportunities presented in the contemporary media landscape, our students question the role that media and communication play in shaping culture and society. Students craft their own program of study, based on a foundation of coursework in theory and method.  

Our faculty and students conduct communication research on a wide range of topics, especially in the areas of global media, social change and activism; communication effects and psychological processes; emerging media and technology; media, identity and representation; political communication; journalism studies; popular communication; and the media industry, laws and policies.
