Temple University Television (TUTV), housed in the Klein College of Media and Communication, is celebrating 15 years of providing city and university wide news and building the careers of dozens of successful journalists.
Launched in 2010, TUTV is a 24-hour educational cable-only television channel and multimedia news resource. Its cable channels, online platforms and social media assets provide a digital showcase for the best work done by Temple’s students, faculty, staff, alumni, community partners and professional broadcast partners.
Getting Started
Paul Gluck, KLN ’76, TUTV’s former general manager and current faculty advisor, helped establish TUTV and managed it until this past May.
“The beginning was an adventure,” Gluck shared. “And it was just scary enough that I was attracted to it.”
Gluck, broadcast pioneer Lew Klein, former Dean Concetta Stewart and Betsy Leebron Tutelman, now the associate vice president for strategic university events, were instrumental in securing sponsorship from Kal and Lucille Rudman, who gave $1.2 million to help establish TUTV. Yet, even with support from the city of Philadelphia and the gift from the Rudmans secured, Gluck and his colleagues still overcame their share of challenges in getting the station running, particularly in building programming up quickly enough to launch.
“We weren't able to build enough as quickly as we wanted to,” he said. “So, one of the challenges was to call friends and alumni and say, ‘Can you help?’ And I'm happy to say that alumni of Temple University all came to the rescue.”
Alumni from local news channels sent programming to TUTV to supplement what they were able to produce at the time. At the same time, Gluck and his colleagues allocated their funding strategically to ensure TUTV had the appropriate technology to stay on the industry’s cutting edge.
“All of a sudden, this place for experienced, experiential learning comes alive,” Gluck said.
Experiential Learning Comes Alive
Throughout its 15 years, TUTV has truly lived up to its goal to provide not only excellent news coverage but also experiential learning for student journalists. Kristina Hammerschmidt, KLN ’11, assistant professor of media studies and production, was part of TUTV’s first live production during her time as a student.
“The beauty of TUTV is that you can be vulnerable here,” Hammerschmidt said. “But it's a safe place, a safe place to make mistakes. You have each other's backs.”
Temple Update, one of TUTV’s most iconic programs, has given dozens of students experience to launch careers in broadcast journalism. By the time they graduate, they have already participated in all of the crucial roles that contribute to a news broadcast.
“[TUTV] was the missing piece, and people who were working for Temple Update got jobs in the industry,” said Peter Jaroff, executive producer of Temple Update.
TUTV students are diligent, hands-on workers who are adaptable to change and innovation. Jaroff shared that many TUTV innovations originated from students introducing what they see on professional news channels.
“Some of the innovations come from students coming in saying, ‘Hey, can we try this? I saw this, and it looks really good. Let's try it,’” Jaroff said. “And that's what we're here for—to provide that kind of opportunity.”
For TUTV’s producers and students, the rush of filming live is key. The pressure of one take creates exceptional journalists who only excel with time. Matt Fine, associate professor of media studies and production and executive producer of OwlSports Update, shared that the live aspect of TUTV underscores to students the importance of deadline management, professionalism and accuracy.
“They know they have one shot at it, they go after it and it makes them better journalists because they knew they had one shot to get it done,” Fine said. “It allows us to have better pre-production, better planning, because again, they know that this is it. And, you add in the idea that it's not just us going live, it's not just a grade, but their parents are watching, athletes are watching, alumni are watching.”
TUTV live shows provide an elevated pre-professional experience, preparing students to take the first steps in their careers.
“When students are applying for jobs, and an employer will say, ‘Hey, do you have live news experience?’ The answer is always ‘Yes,” Fine said.
Looking Ahead
To commemorate the 15-year milestone, TUTV has refreshed its branding with a new logo that nods to the rich history of the organization while seizing the potential of the future. The design incorporates the updated Temple “T” mark and modernized typography, along with a clean, celebratory nod to TUTV’s 15th anniversary through a tagline. This special edition mark reinforces TUTV’s legacy of student-driven, university-supported broadcasting while highlighting its ongoing impact across campus, Philadelphia and beyond.
“For 15 years, TUTV has been a place where Temple students learn by doing, telling stories that matter to our campus, our city and beyond,” Joe Schreiber, general manager of TUTV, said. “This brand refresh reflects both our history and our future—a commitment to giving students the tools, mentorship and real-world experience to launch their careers in an ever-changing media landscape.”
TUTV is constantly innovating to continue providing an experience on par with professional broadcast media. On October 1, TUTV will premiere TUgether, a new series spotlighting positive impact stories of individuals and groups making a difference in the Temple University community. A conversation and episode premiere will take place at Annenberg Hall in the Atrium at noon. Register now to attend this exciting event!
