Mikias has a diverse professional and academic background. He earned his B.A. in Language and Literature and M.A. in Communication and Journalism from Addis Ababa University. Later, he obtained an Executive M.A. in Peace and Security in Africa from the Institute of Peace and Security Studies. With extensive experience in democracy, freedom of expression, elections, governance, human rights, peacebuilding, journalism, communication for development, public health, and support for vulnerable communities, his career spans leading numerous international initiatives in the United Nations System. He has worked for various departments, including the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization, the African Union Department of Political Affairs, the World Bank Group, and UNWOMEN. His contributions include strategic planning, diplomacy, lobbying, external relations, and public information. Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. in Media and Communication studies.

Mikias is a skilled team player who has demonstrated international leadership capabilities, wisdom, and accomplished project management skills. He is well-known for his expert insights and is highly respected in his field. He combines his technical understanding with diplomatic acumen and knowledge of public policy to identify solutions for positive change. Mobilizing and inspiring partners to take action through effective communication strategies is one of his fortes. In 2019, the African Union Commission’s Communications Week magazine recognized his outstanding contributions and listed Mikias as one of the top 50 African Region Communication Leaders.

Mikias is passionate about empowering young adults and dedicates himself to mentoring them through their academic and professional journeys via the Global Thinker's Forum program.
