Name: Tom Rickert

Graduation Year: 2011

Major: Media Studies and Production

Occupation, Company: Asst Brand Manager, Program Director, Podcast Director, Traffic Center Dir. of Operations / KYW Newsradio, Audacy

Describe your current occupation and if applicable, how was Temple the launchpad for your current position?
I currently have the privilege of providing leadership and oversight for KYW Newsradio, Philadelphia's breaking news and public service information station serving the city for 60 years. I oversee the newsroom and news brand, content, over the air presentation and imaging, partnerships, brand strategy, program direction, original podcasts, and our in house 24/7 live traffic center. Temple University gave me the connections to get that first entry-level job at the station in 2011, developed and nurtured my interest in audio storytelling and communications, and it was at Temple University where I learned really essential life and work skills I use every day, like how to work proactively as part of an organization for a shared purpose.

Why do you support Temple University and serve on the Klein Alumni Association Board?
Temple has played an oversized role in my life and career path, not just because of the institution itself but also because of the wonderful people who are dedicated to its mission. I’m appreciative of my time at Temple, and I recognize the powerful force the people here can serve in the lives of students and friends of the University. I’d like to help give back in recognition and appreciation of what I gained while I was attending Temple, and in the hope that I can be one of those people making a significant, positive impact on the next generation of Owls.

What excites you about the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication?
The people! Every organization is only as good as the people who power it, and Klein is filled with the best, most caring, proactive, hardest working people out there. You can do just about anything if you start with competent people with big hearts and big ambitions working together.

What advice could you give someone looking to become more engaged with Klein College?
Say yes and show up. Volunteer if someone asks for help. Don’t assume you have nothing to give, there’s always something you can help with, as long as you let someone know you are willing.

What was your favorite memory while a student at Temple?
Too many. Meeting my wife! Getting the job interview that would become my career. Meeting Schoolly D on a class trip to Phil Nicolo’s studio. All of the Audio Production courses. Amy Caple’s Senior Seminar. The res life staff. Meeting people who would become critically important friends or mentors for the next decade and on.
