Klein College’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is celebrating 50 years of dedication to mentorship, leadership and networking. To commemorate this milestone, the members of Temple PRSSA hosted a number of special events, including the PRSSA Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference.
On March 22 and 23, students and communications professionals from all over the East Coast came to the conference in Philadelphia to network, listen to industry experts and celebrate Temple PRSSA’s 50th year running. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney kicked off the conference by speaking about the importance of public relations, then opened the stage to panels that discussed industry trends and news. One of these panels, featuring Mary Austen, president and CEO of Tierney; Megan Smith, founder and president of Brownstone PR; and Afia Ohene-Frempong, the external communications manager for PECO, was a powerful discussion about public relations practitioners’ roles in the #MeToo Movement. Also during the event, attendees donated more than 150 children’s books to Mighty Writers, a Philadelphia non-profit supporting children’s literacy. The conference received media coverage from 6ABC, and public relations trade publication, the Bulldog Reporter.
Outside of the regional conference, Temple PRSSA celebrated their anniversary throughout the year with special events run by internal student committees. Some of these events included a behind-the-scenes session with the Philadelphia Union’s communications team; tours of SEER Interactive, Maven Communications, Tierney, Sage Communications, and Garfield Group; in addition to ‘alumni takeovers’ on PRSSA’s Instagram account to enhance member skills, improve leadership knowledge and create lasting relationships in the public relations industry.
