David Boardman, dean of the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University, has been recognized by a major national business publication as a NewsPro Noteworthy Journalism Educator for 2020.
The nomination is awarded by a committee from Crain Communications’ NewsPro trade publication. Boardman joins nine other notable media educators who use their expertise to help promote effective journalism.
Boardman’s nomination speaks to the dedication he has shown throughout his decades in the media industry. Before coming to Temple in 2013, he was executive editor and senior vice president of The Seattle Times, overseeing coverage that won four Pulitzer Prizes. Currently, he is chair of both the Lenfest Institute for Journalism and the Solutions Journalism Network. He has been a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes four times, and has led seminars for media professionals around the world.
Klein College has grown significantly in stature and resources under his leadership.
“David Boardman’s initiatives at Temple have resulted in some outstanding honors,” said Janet Stilson, editor of NewsPro. “Klein College of Media and Communication picked up the Equity and Diversity Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. And Temple University Television was named the country’s best college TV station by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. Both recognitions, received in 2018, speak to Boardman’s outstanding leadership."
Honorees of the NewsPro Journalism Educator recognition are selected from nominations submitted by their peers. NewsPro noted Boardman’s “approachable, down to earth, boyish enthusiasm and an uncanny ability to get things done on behalf of the news business.”
Boardman said he appreciates the recognition not only as an individual but for Klein College as a university. “This is an honor, and a reflection of all of the wonderful work the faculty and staff of the Klein College are doing,” Boardman said. “I’m especially pleased that Crain’s recognized our accomplishments in diversity, equity and inclusion, which has been a major point of emphasis for us.”
