Philadelphia, PA – Temple University's Klein College of Media and Communication announces the retirement of Associate Professor Karen M. Turner, a distinguished member of the faculty and a trailblazer in the field of journalism and media studies.
Karen M. Turner, whose remarkable career spans over three decades, will retire at the end of the calendar year. Turner, a graduate of Dartmouth College and Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, began her journey in journalism after a pivotal career shift from law. She developed a passion for broadcasting in Chicago and later honed her skills at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, courtesy of an NBC fellowship.
Turner’s professional journey is marked by notable stints as a reporter and public affairs director in various radio stations including, WCTC-AM in New Jersey, and WPEN-AM in Philadelphia. Her role as the first press secretary for Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell highlighted her versatile talent.
In 1992, Professor Turner joined Temple University, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a commitment to practical, hands-on journalism education. Her work at Temple has been nothing short of extraordinary. Turner is a recipient of the prestigious Great Teacher Award in 2021, a testament to her exceptional teaching and mentorship.
Her research interests, deeply impactful in the realms of new media technologies, race studies, journalism pedagogy, and media diversity, have made significant contributions to the academic community. Turner has been a guiding force in directing programs like Klein GO London and leading international reporting programs in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa.
Beyond academia, Turner is an avid sports enthusiast and an advocate for quality journalism and intelligent talk radio. Her compassion extends to her canine companions, reflecting her multifaceted personality and interests.
