PHILADELPHIA, March 11, 2024 – In a groundbreaking move, Mayor Cherelle Parker has announced the appointment of Quaiser Abdullah as Philadelphia's inaugural Director of Muslim Engagement. The announcement was made at a press conference held on Thursday, March 7, at City Hall, marking a significant milestone in the city's efforts to foster inclusivity and engagement with the Muslim community.
Abdullah, a respected imam and a prominent leader within Philadelphia's Muslim community brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new role. He will continue contributing to the city's social and cultural landscape while maintaining his positions as a faculty member in the Department of Communication and Social Influence and as director of the Master of Science in Communication Management program at Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication.
Throughout his tenure at Temple, Abdullah has been instrumental in promoting dialogue and understanding, particularly during the recent tense months marked by the international conflict. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, earning him the Faculty Senate’s Outstanding Faculty Service Award.
Mayor Parker's decision to create the position of Director of Muslim Engagement and appoint Abdullah to the role reflects the city's commitment to diversity and recognition of the Muslim community's vital contributions to Philadelphia's fabric.
As the first-ever Director of Muslim Engagement, he will enhance communication and collaboration between the city and its Muslim residents, ensuring that their needs and perspectives are adequately represented in city policies and initiatives.
In his role, he will also work alongside the new director of Faith-Based Affairs to continue fostering closer relationships among the city's different faith communities. Abdullah states, “The strength of Philadelphia lies in its ability to create sustainable change out of collaboration across differences.”
The Klein College faculty, staff and community are proud of Abdullah's achievements and are excited to support him in his dual role.
We congratulate Quaiser Abdullah on his historic appointment and look forward to his contributions to making Philadelphia a more inclusive, understanding and unified community.
