Sports Media Academic Programs launch sock drive for Philadelphia neighbors
Students in Klein College’s Sports Media Academic Programs are turning community spirit into community service through a new sock drive benefiting people experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia.
The initiative invites members of the Klein College and Temple University communities to donate new pairs or packages of socks between September 28 and October 9. Donations may be placed in the collection box in the Annenberg Hall atrium or brought to the Association for Women in Sports Media table at Klein Fest on Sept. 11.
The drive is being organized by students, staff and faculty from the sports media major and certificate programs. Although the initiative is rooted in the sports media community, donations from all students, faculty, staff and alumni are welcome.
“This is just an opportunity for sports media students to give back to our Philadelphia community,” said Lauren Bullock, director of the sports media program.
Clean, dry socks can make a meaningful difference for people without consistent access to laundry facilities or a change of clothing. People experiencing homelessness may spend extended periods walking or standing and can have difficulty keeping their feet clean and dry, increasing the risk of pain, wounds and infection.
Bullock hopes the drive will become an annual tradition that brings sports media students together while supporting their Philadelphia neighbors.
“One of my mentors told me that learning happens inside and outside of the class,” Bullock said during the planning process. “My hope is that the project brings people together and addresses a need in the local community.”
Collected socks will be delivered to the Salvation Army for distribution to people experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia.
