Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in sports media, to begin July 1, 2027. A Ph.D. in communication, media studies, journalism, or a related field is expected by the start date; candidates who are ABD at the time of application will be considered.
The departmental home of the successful candidate will be determined by the candidate’s research and teaching expertise. Klein College is home to four departments: Advertising and Public Relations, Communication, Journalism, and Media Studies and Production. In addition, the Department of Film and Media Arts will join Klein College in summer 2027. The college also houses several master’s programs and centers, including the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media.
We seek a colleague with an active research agenda that could employ a range of research methods to study digital and social media, emerging media, and the impact of technology on the sports media industry. We are especially interested in candidates who are forward-thinking about technology and who can strengthen both our teaching and research related to digital platforms, emerging technologies, and the future of media as it relates to the sports industry. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, AI and emerging technologies in sports production and distribution, sports betting and gambling media, fandom and audiences, and sports journalism and storytelling. We also encourage applicants who are globally minded in their approach to sports media. Klein College’s Latinx Initiative, for example, is a project designed to respond to the shifting cultural, political, sociological, economic, and global landscape of Latino communities in our city and beyond.
In addition, we hope to find a colleague whose scholarship complements and elevates the work of the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media. The ideal candidate’s research will align with emerging trends in sports media and technology, creating new opportunities for collaboration, expanding the Center’s scholarly profile, and strengthening connections among our teaching, research, and industry and community engagement. This position presents a meaningful opportunity to bridge the Center’s strong practitioner focus with a growing research agenda.
Overall, the successful candidate will have a track record of, or the potential for, impactful scholarship, dynamic and inclusive teaching, and openness to collaboration on scholarly and applied initiatives. We seek a colleague who can contribute to teaching, mentoring, and programmatic development at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Klein’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Media and Communication. Industry experience is valued but not required.
