Jessica Shaw is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations at Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication. Jessica’s research examines how organizations communicate about emerging technologies – such as artificial intelligence and smart devices – within risk and crisis contexts. She is particularly interested in how communication strategies shape public understanding, perceptions of responsibility, authenticity, and trust in technology-driven environments.
Her research integrates strategic communication, risk communication, and media ethics. Her work has been published in Public Relations Review, Mass Communication and Society, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, and others. Her current projects explore risk-benefit framing in organizational messaging, consumer privacy fatigue, and regulatory communication surrounding data protection.
Before entering academia, Jessica built a decade-long career in communication and public relations. She began as a journalist and later served as a public information officer for the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority. She has also held communication roles across nonprofit, educational, and government organizations. These experiences continue to inform her approach to both research and teaching.
Jessica earned her Ph.D. in Media and Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2025. She also holds a Master of Mass Communication from Louisiana State University (MMC, ‘22) and a B.S. from Syracuse University (‘10). She is a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and holds an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) credential.
