Laura Zaylea is a media artist and educator with a specific interest in storytelling innovation through video production and emergent media technologies. Her creative work includes an independent feature film, several narrative and experimental shorts, and new media projects including 360° video, web-based multimedia, and locative media / media installation.
Her creative work is regularly exhibited nationally at the University Film and Video Association New Media Gallery (2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2012), and internationally at the Electronic Literature Organization Conference and Media Arts Festival (2019, 2018, 2013, 2012). Her work has also been featured at the Digital Queers Conference (New York, NY) and the &Now Festival of New Writing (San Diego, CA); at galleries such as Nouspace (Vancouver, WA), Aggregate Space (San Francisco, CA) and the Digital Arts & Entertainment Laboratory (Atlanta, GA); at screening venues such as the Echo Park Film Center (Los Angeles, CA) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA); and at film festivals such as the Halifax International Film Festival (Halifax, Nova Scotia), Frameline International Film Festival (San Francisco, CA), Northampton Film Festival (Northampton, MA), and the Toronto Urban Film Festival (Toronto, Canada).
Zaylea’s recent creative work uses new media technologies to foster audience engagement with fictional and nonfictional stories in unexpected ways. This includes fictional work in which viewers ‘enter’ the story (Speak2MeInCode, 2013), ‘change’ the story (Closer Than Rust, 2015) and ‘play’ the story (Free Swim, 2016). She is currently working on a web-based interactive documentary about LGBTQ families, supported by the Temple University Presidential Humanities and Arts Research Program.
Prof. Zaylea’s teaching practice at Temple includes both traditional and emergent media production courses, at the graduate and undergraduate level.
