And the winner is… TUTV! On March 6, 2021, Temple University Television (TUTV) took home Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) awards in the Best TV Station On-Air Promotion and Best Variety Program (Video) categories and was recognized with nominations in several other categories.
Temple Talk — TUTV’s first entertainment talk show, which is run entirely run by volunteers — won Best Variety Program (Video). “They don’t get any credit or anything for doing the show, they’re doing it really purely so they become better at what they’re doing,” TUTV Content Producer Edward Dress said.
This is certainly the case with Temple Talk Co-Executive Producers Joe Andruzzi and Kamryn Scrivens. Andruzzi is pursuing a media studies and production major and has been involved with Temple Talk since his freshman year at Temple. He started as a producer on the production team and worked his way up to director of production before becoming co-executive producer with Scrivens his junior year. “I have made such incredible memories and experiences from it and the friends that I’ve gained from it, I have nothing but good things to say about it,” Andruzzi said.
Scrivens, now a senior, is pursuing a journalism major with a Spanish minor and hopes to start a career in broadcast after she graduates this spring. She has been involved with Temple Talk since her sophomore year. While juggling positions with other TUTV programs such as Temple Update and The Temp, she did odd jobs for Temple Talk until she worked her way up to being a correspondent. Scrivens eventually focused more on Temple Talk and became the main host and co-executive producer this year.
Dress teaches ADV 3008: Television Promotion: On-Air, Online, On Social, and each year his students are assigned midterms and finals to help promote TUTV. One midterm submitted by Bridgit Donoghue, Matthew Kelly, Hannah Merendino and Colin McIntyre in the fall of 2019 called “Don’t You Forget about TUTV” won the IBS award for Best TV Station On-Air Promotion.
“All you had to do is sign up for a class, work with Ed, be creative, work with a team, and that actually produced something really, really cool and that can be talked about,” Donoghue said.
As an advertising major with concentrations in art direction and copywriting, Donoghue had never taken a promotions class before Dress’s. She was happy to have so much creative reign in the project, and said that the class was very eye-opening for her group to see just how much TUTV had to offer.
Andruzzi, Scrivens, Donoghue and their teams are ecstatic to have received an IBS award. “After three years, it was just great to see all of our hard work put together,” Scrivens said.
“It shows the high level of work that the students at Temple do, and I think it really helps that they’re kind of pushed to do this work themselves,” Dress said. He is glad that TUTV could be recognized as an outstanding college TV network amongst other nominees for the IBS awards.
