Klein College of Media and Communication's Logan Center for Urban Investigative Reporting collaboration with WHYY News, titled "Young, Unhoused and Unseen," has been honored with the 2024 Regional Murrow Award for Innovation in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
The project provided an in-depth exploration of youth homelessness, highlighting the often-overlooked stories of unhoused young people through a podcast, videos and more. Stories were brought to the forefront through rigorous investigative journalism with innovative storytelling techniques.
“I am really thrilled that the podcast is being honored which means the voices of the unhoused we amplified are being heard,” wrote Professor Yvonne Latty, director of the Logan Center. “The people we met and interviewed moved me beyond words. Their strength and resilience are inspiring.”
She continued to thank WHYY News for giving this important work a platform and a special thank you to WHYY reporter, Kenneth Cooper, KLN ‘20, her cohost and co-producer.
“He worked so hard and is an example of the excellence of Klein College,” Latty noted.
The Regional Murrow Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in multimedia journalism, is often regarded as one of the most prestigious accolades in broadcast and digital news.
The awards, administered by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), are distributed across 14 geographic regions to both small and large radio, television and digital media outlets. Winners at the regional level are considered for the prestigious National Murrow Award, which will be presented at an awards ceremony later this year.
The collaboration also recently received an award from the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA) and two Professional Keystone Media Awards, including first place for Best Podcast.
These recognitions mark an important milestone for both the Logan Center and WHYY News, emphasizing their commitment to inclusive journalism that not only informs but also drives change within the community.
