In high school, junior communication studies major Alice Nguyen felt like she relied too heavily on her parents. Originally from Vietnam, Nguyen was interested in continuing her education in the United States. She applied to colleges in California and along the East Coast. She wanted to pursue communications, and, after much deliberation, she chose Temple as her new home.
“At first, I didn't really want to study abroad because I don’t like it when I am out of my comfort zone,” Nguyen said. “I am glad I chose to study abroad, and I am glad it was Temple. I found myself being able to do lots of things that I thought I could never really do.”
Although she was nervous to leave Vietnam, Nguyen trusted that the risk would pay off. So fair, it has.
As an international student, securing an internship can be especially challenging. Not all organizations can accommodate internships. Nguyen felt that stress early on, knowing she would have to work harder to find the right fit.
Since her sophomore year, she has become close to Scott Gratson, chair of the Department of Communication Studies. When internship season approached, Nguyen turned to him for guidance. His advice was simple: be patient and trust that the right opportunity would come.
Two interviews later, she secured an internship with the Philadelphia Horticultural Society (PHS).
“To see doubt being conquered is the most wonderful feeling in the world,” said Gratson. “And to seek doubt conquered by being a part of a major exhibit. That is not beating doubt—that is creating pride.”
Since last November, Nguyen has served as a public relations intern supporting both internal and external communications and helping coordinate events for the 2026 PHS Flower Show. Her responsibilities include compiling media coverage reports, drafting media advisories, organizing press archives and assisting with broader communications strategy.
In January, she attended the 2026 PHS Flower Show press conference, helping manage media logistics and event flow. Speakers included Cherelle Parker, Jordan Harris and PHS President Matt Rader. That same month, through PHS’s partnership with the City of Philadelphia, Nguyen also participated in community engagement efforts, representing the organization at local events.
During the Flower Show, she will assist members of the press and social media influencers, supporting media relations and on-site coordination
“Alice has been especially helpful with tracking PHS media coverage,” said Lauren Scully, public relations and communications manager for the PHS. “She was also particularly helpful supporting our team during a press conference back in January, where we shared a first look at this year's Flower Show.”
When she first began the internship, Nguyen had little prior knowledge of public relations. Over the past several months, however, she has developed skills in media strategy, professional communication and event management
After graduation, Nguyen hopes to continue working in the nonprofit sector, focusing on marketing and communications. The fast-paced, ever-evolving nature of the work appeals to her.
“I feel like I have that connection with non-profit organizations because I have been volunteering since I was in high school,” said Nguyen. “So, I think there is some connection with PHS, and I got lucky.”
