Student Opportunities in the Klein College of Media and Communication
It’s an exciting time to be a part of Klein College, where the selection of campus media, clubs, internships, organizations and study-away opportunities grow every year. Through such activities, you’ll create valuable connections with your community, peers and professors; gain knowledge and experience in different fields of study; and delve into subjects you’re passionate about—all while building your résumé.
Whether you want to kick off your future with an internship at an advertising agency, learn international communications strategies in a new city or a foreign country, or roll up your sleeves and work on a campus publication or at a radio station, you’ll find peers and programs that strengthen your skills and broaden your perspective.
As an Klein College student, you can obtain internships in a variety of settings related to your field of study. Internships can open doors of all kinds: They enable you to meet new people and develop significant professional networks and personal connections, and they provide real-world experience that can serve as a springboard for your life after graduation. And you can feel confident knowing that Klein College faculty and Klein College Career Center staff work closely with internship providers to ensure you’re treated with respect and your work is valued.

All Klein College students have the opportunity to explore internships that are directly related to their degrees.
All advertising majors are required to do either a professional internship or be involved with Diamond Edge Communications, our student-run ad agency. Both offer valuable hands-on experience in professional advertising-related experiences. Diamond Edge works with local Philadelphia clients under the supervision of an advertising professor to develop strategic plans, research, digital and traditional creative materials, media plans and presentations. Upon completion of an internship within the Advertising program, you'll prepare a portfolio of work that will be a valuable asset as you begin your career search.
Internships are often available at a variety of firms within the field of media and advertising, like
- advertising agencies;
- corporate marketing departments;
- hospitality and tourism venues;
- interactive agencies;
- media buying and planning firms;
- online, print, radio and TV media outlets; and
- production companies.
Our internship directors and faculty members and the director of Career Services will not only guide you through the process of seeking and identifying quality internship opportunities, but also help you prepare a résumé, write cover letters, and create a LinkedIn page.
Communication and Social Influence Internships
Though not required, internships or communications field experiences are highly recommended for Communication and Social Influence majors. In addition to earning academic credit, students will gain industry experience in a wide cross-section of organizations, including
- community outreach and development firms,
- communication consulting firms,
- corporate strategic planning firms,
- copywriting departments,
- human resources departments,
- fundraising and event planning organizations,
- media relations agencies,
- public relations firms, and
- strategic planning firms.
Internship and communication field experience opportunities are posted regularly to the Communication and Social Influence listserv, and students are free to secure their own internships and communication field experiences. To do so, you must provide written proof of an opportunity and seek departmental approval.
Communication Studies Internships
Though not required for graduation, internships are strongly recommended by the Communication Studies program. Internships provide you with hands-on experience, skills for working in organizational settings and degree credits, all at the same time.
Placements include media- and communication-related outlets, such as
- an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Defense,
- community organizations,
- international organizations,
- major corporations, and
- radio and TV stations.
The Department of Communication Studies also maintains a listserv that lists new internship opportunities on a daily basis.
During junior or senior year of the Journalism undergraduate program, you may opt to take an internship that will give you a competitive edge in the field while earning credit towards your degree. Our students have interned at non- and for-profit companies, as well as local, state and federal government agencies. One student even spent a term working at the White House.
Though most of the opportunities are located in the tri-state area—particularly in Philadelphia and its suburbs, as well as southern New Jersey—some have been in places like Denver; New York; and Washington, D.C. Regardless of location, Journalism interns have gotten experience at numerous media- and journalism-related firms and agencies, including
- corporate communications departments,
- digital communications and new media agencies,
- online publications,
- radio stations
- TV stations, and
- wire service bureaus.
At the graduate level, you may earn academic credit for an internship in a field related to journalism and mass communication that is carefully monitored and supervised. Graduate internships have requirements that include consultation with the organization or business offering the internship, specifications of the duties to be undertaken and regular reports from a designated supervisor. You may not earn academic credit for current employment experience.
New internship opportunities can be found on the internship database, the Journalism Student Listserv and on the third floor of Annenberg Hall. You may also seek approval to perform an internship at a venue of your choice. Keep in mind that in order to earn credit for your internship, the work must be with a legitimate communications-related organization and related to the fields covered in your courses.
Media Studies and Production Internships
All Media Studies and Production majors are required to complete either an internship or a practicum during junior or senior year. (A minimum overall GPA 2.75 is required.) Hundreds of businesses, institutions and organizations in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and across the nation provide opportunities for our students to work in relevant professional fields while earning course credit. Opportunities are available in a variety of media-related outlets, including
- advertising agencies,
- graphic design and multimedia agencies,
- radio stations,
- recording studios,
- sports leagues and sports media outlets,
- TV stations, and
- video production agencies.
Public Relations Internships
Public Relations Field Experience
The public relations field experience complements the PR student's formal education. For many students, the field experience is the first opportunity to gain experience in a communication career path. The field experience should acquaint students with actual professional practices in their disciplines. The field experience offers students the first on-site opportunity to learn about some of the realities of working in the communications field they are planning to pursue as a possible career path. The field experience typically occurs before the internship.
Internship in Public Relations
Organized professional work under supervision in public relations organizations, in non-profits, agency or corporate settings. Students can actively seek internship opportunities on their own, or work with the PR internship director to gain valuable professional experience.
If the thought of getting hands-on professional experience while living in a foreign country or a major U.S. metropolis sounds enticing, then Klein College’s Global Internship program can help you get there. As a global intern, you can choose from cities like Barcelona, Dublin, Hong Kong, London, Paris or numerous, major U.S. cities. You’ll spend three weeks on Temple’s Main Campus studying Intercultural Communication in the Workplace with other Study Away students before departing for a full-time internship at your chosen destination.
Each location combines exciting events, learning and travel with a résumé-building internship. The pre-departure orientation and the Intercultural Communication course will get you fully prepared for the cultural differences you’ll encounter in your host city.
