When the John. F Hartranft School approached The School of Media and Communication Care Committee asking for a hand to fund its upcoming field trip to a Temple women's basketball game, the responses flooded in.
"The outpouring of support was tremendous," said Rochelle Davis, Executive Assistant to the Dean of the SMC. "The turnaround time was incredible."
Within a week of Hartranft's request, Temple donated $600 to the school, enough to provide them with everything they need to take their sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes to the basketball game, as well as $220 for their next field trip.
Temple's Athletics Department obtained a bus, donated the tickets and will provide boxed lunches from Jimmy John's, who will comp some of the cost.
As a community partner, Temple provides a continuous support system for the Hartranft school. The partnership began last year when Temple donated school supplies to Hartranft, a school in need of educational resources.
"It's a low-funded school, in a very low economic area," Davis said. "They need our help and support with people volunteering to tutor, to bring their statewide test scores up. It's not only financial support, it's support wherever it's needed."
At a time when Philadelphia public schools struggle to provide their students with the supplies and resources they need for a comprehensive education, Temple extends a helping hand.
