Klein College of Media and Communication is home to students who are curious, globally minded and driven to make an impact. Rising sophomore Willa Burns excels in these traits. This summer, she took an internship with the communications and human resources department of Safran Group, a global aerospace company based in France.
“Willa was a student of mine in the KLN 1002 Introduction to Professional Development course, and—based on her stellar performance in the classroom—it makes complete sense that she's hitting the ground running with such an exciting professional opportunity during the summer of her freshman year,” said Hanna Braid, KLN ‘20, assistant director of Klein College’s Office of Engagement, Development, Growth and Experience (EDGE). “Gaining international internship experience will set her ahead in any field, and I was happy to be a part of her journey.”
Burns was drawn to Safran’s mission to create more sustainable aviation. She also wanted the chance to hone her language proficiency. Since the internship will be in French, she is eager to use her skills in the workplace. This is not her first experience spending time abroad; after graduating from high school, she spent a year teaching English to elementary school students in France.
“It was awesome,” Burns said. “It was a lot; I mean, I moved to France not knowing anyone at 18, which was crazy. But it was so fun.”
The internship with Safran is entirely in French, but Burns is not worried about this obstacle. She shared that she found a community at Temple University of French-speaking students, and that working in that language is what she has always wanted to do.
Burns is most looking forward to learning about the world of human resources and communications within the workplace, how to communicate effectively in a foreign language and always be mindful and aware of cultural differences. She is also looking forward to living on her own and discovering more about herself and her passions.
After the completion of her internship with Safran, Burns wants to continue traveling. She plans to study abroad in France again next spring—because, as she says, she “just can’t get enough.”
Braid is sure that no matter what Burns decides to do after her summer internship, she will be successful.
“From the start of the semester, Willa involved me in her pursuit of gaining an internship abroad. We've had many email interactions, troubleshooting and finding resources for her to take an unconventional route towards studying abroad,” Braid said. “Throughout all the twists and turns, Willa remained steadfast in her wanderlust; she was determined to travel this summer through her internship abroad. It’s clear that she is curious about the world around her and has a passion for learning!”
