The Department of Communication and Social Influence in the Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University seeks an exceptional and innovative leader for the position of department chair, a tenured position with faculty rank of Full Professor, to begin in Fall 2024. Prior leadership and administrative experience is strongly preferred. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in communication or related field, an established scholarly research trajectory, and a record of teaching commensurate with the qualifications for appointment of Full Professor at a Carnegie Research One (R1) University.

Leveraging Temple University’s setting as an urban institution, the Department Communication and Social Influence (CSI) focuses on teaching effective communicators in civic engagement, risk communication, conflict management, and core aspects of urban environments: advocacy, diversity, equity, and inclusion, intercultural communication, and social justice. The CSI major prepares students for working in private, public, government, and non-profit sectors, as well as law school and graduate programs. The Department of Communication and Social Influence teaches students to develop humanistic and social-scientific approaches for effective public communication in urban environments. The ideal candidate will share the department’s strong commitment to undergraduate student success.

Responsibilities of the department chair include, but are not limited to the following: expanding undergraduate enrollment and retention; collaboratively working with Klein College and Temple University administrators; exercising leadership in proposing and developing curricular changes; conducting faculty/staff performance evaluations; producing departmental reports; guiding  departmental initiatives; providing leadership and service on department and college committees; supporting faculty in their pursuit and management of external funding through grants and contracts; and representing the interests of the department to Klein College, Temple University and the Philadelphia community.

We are looking for an established, internationally recognized communication scholar who will contribute to the department’s intellectual leadership in communication and social influence. Because the department is a mix of social science and humanities, the ideal candidate will have an appreciation for multiple epistemological values, will be expected to fit well within the knowledge base of the department, will be truly committed to social change in their teaching and research, and will be experienced with obtaining external funding. Candidates should hold a deep commitment to shared faculty governance.

The successful candidate will be qualified to teach classes in the undergraduate CSI curriculum and in Klein College’s interdisciplinary Media and Communication doctoral program. The ideal candidate will mentor students, serve on doctoral committees, and maintain an active scholarly agenda.
